Former steel plant converted into pipe inspection facility

8 December 2015

The former Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel facility in Benwood will soon be home to a company doing business with the natural gas industry.

The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register reports Dunbar, Pennsylvania-based JLE Industries has invested over $6 million to establish an 80,000-square-foot plant. It's expected to open in January and employ as many as 45 when fully operational.

Workers at the Marshall County site will be focused on inspecting and placing threading on pipe used to carry natural gas. Taken from drilling sites, the pipes will be placed inside a large magnetic resonance imaging scanner, which will X-ray the pipes for defects.

The former steel plant had been closed for the last 20 years before JLE moved in to the plant in July, and began extensive cleaning and painting work.
