Tata Steel’s partnership with University of Wales Trinity Saint David is developing the next generation of highly skilled engineers through innovative Degree Apprenticeship programmes in Mechanical and Advanced Manufacturing Engineering.

The collaboration blends academic study with hands-on experience, equipping learners with the skills they need to thrive in the UK’s evolving engineering and manufacturing sectors.

Port Talbot-based apprentices Luke Read Jenkins and Joe Shankland are two shining examples of the game-changing partnership in action.

Luke, 25, joined Tata Steel as a Higher Apprentice and is now based in the Hot Rolling Mill. His studies at UWTSD include advanced materials, manufacturing systems and applied research, supporting his development across key areas of the business. 

“My aim has always been to deepen my knowledge of engineering, develop professional skills, and build industry connections,” Luke explained. “The course at UWTSD, alongside my role at Tata Steel, gives me the opportunity to achieve all three.”

Joe, 23, began with a traditional university degree before switching to the Degree Apprenticeship pathway. Now working in the Cold Mill at Port Talbot, he’s contributed to projects involving 3D printing, load configuration and engineering standards, with a focus on sustainability. 

Joe said: “The Degree Apprenticeship has given me the opportunity to gain valuable on-site experience in engineering while also furthering my education, networking, and management skills.

“The fact that the programme is accredited and delivered by UWTSD gave me the confidence that I would still complete a high-quality degree.

“I would definitely recommend this course. I’ve been able to transfer my university learning directly into the workplace while also benefitting from an income and tuition fee support. It has helped me grow both professionally and personally.”

As part of their learning, the pair also ceased the opportunity of a study trip to Japan, gaining international insight into engineering education and industry practices, which they described as an “transformative professional and cultural experience.”

Our Degree Apprenticeships ensure that learners gain accredited qualifications while applying their knowledge directly in the workplace. This approach develops highly skilled graduates who are ready to make an immediate difference in their organisations and in the wider sector.”

Matthew Davies, Technical Training Manager at Tata Steel, said:

“We introduced the Degree Apprenticeships in 2023 – not only have we had one learner already graduate through the Degree Apprenticeship programme at UWTSD, but Joe and Luke have been given a once in a lifetime opportunity to join a study trip to Japan to knowledge share how we operate within Tata Steel versus a wide range of sectors.

“Upon their return, the pair presented their findings which was fascinating to hear what they learnt as well as the differences in cultures. I look forward to seeing them continuing their exciting journeys with UWTSD and using the tools and techniques learnt into their daily work schedules.”
