Taiwan Semiconductor Research Institute Selects IQM Spark Quantum Computer to Boost Research

26 November 2024

Taiwan Semiconductor Research Institute (TSRI), part of the National Applied Research Laboratories, today announced that it has purchased its first full-stack quantum computer from IQM (IQM Quantum Computers), a global leader in the design, manufacture and sale of superconducting quantum computers. Delivery and installation of the system at TSRI’s facility will take place in the second quarter of 2025.

Both TSRI and IQM are seeking to accelerate the development of quantum computing in Taiwan, and the acquisition of the IQM Spark system (a high-fidelity 5-qubit quantum computer) will enable the Institute to use this system for teaching and research purposes.

Taiwan's significant efforts in advancing low-temperature Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) technologies and quantum computing will also enable the Institute to leverage IQM's technical expertise in system integration and research efforts. These CMOS solutions can support the implementation of large-scale quantum processors, which are essential for error correction.

This strategic collaboration will be an illustration of the importance of international partnerships established between IQM and Taiwan's national quantum research teams to promote leading technological advances.

“The acquisition of our first full-stack superconducting quantum computer is a key milestone for Taiwan in the global quantum computing race. It aims to help Taiwan advance in the field of quantum computing and demonstrate how our country can leverage its leading position in the semiconductor industry to enter this innovative field. This collaboration will strengthen the connection between academia and industry, and create a solid foundation for cultivating domestic quantum computing talent,” said Professor Tuo-Hung Hou, Director General of TSRI.

“IQM’s mission from the beginning has been to support the development of the local quantum ecosystem. The delivery of this first quantum computer to Taiwan is also a testament to our commitment to this,” said Mikko Välimäki, Co-CEO of IQM Quantum Computers. “Taiwan is recognized as a global leader in semiconductor technology with a thriving industry, and TSRI’s purchase will enable its technology ecosystem to take off in the quantum field.”
