Canam lands big fabrication contract for sprawling new Ikea warehouse in Montreal

14 December 2017

Steel fabricator Canam Group Inc. has won a contract to build joists and other steel components for two Ikea projects in Quebec.

The Swedish furniture giant is currently constructing a 1 million sq. ft. distribution centre in Beauharnois—just outside Montreal—and a new 241,681 sq. ft. retail store in Quebec City.

Canam said the joist deal for the Beauharnois site is the largest joist contract the company has ever won. The project also includes joist girders, a steel deck and a 414,437 sq. ft. section of roof supported by just the warehouse’s pallet racking system. The company said deliveries for the project are scheduled to start this month and run until March.

Fabrication work for the Quebec City Ikea store, meanwhile, has been largely completed. Canam said it started deliveries to the site in September and expects to wrap up the work by the end of the month.

The Saint-Georges, Que.-headquartered company did not disclose the value of the contracts.
