China can meet its 2016 target for reducing capacity in its coal and steel sectors, the country's top economic planner said on Thursday.

The comments were made by National Development & Reform Commission (NDRC) spokesman Zhao Chenxin at a briefing in Beijing.

China plans to cut its steel production capacity this year by 45 million tonnes and lower coal output capacity by 280 million tonnes, the head of the NDRC said on June 26 .
