Company from China interested in buying Zelezara Smederevo

2 July 2015

Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic has said that a company from China is interested in purchasing steel mill Zelezara Smederevo, underlining that this is the second biggest steel producer in China.

In a live broadcast on TV Pink on Tuesday evening, Vucic noted that the government scrapped subsidies for Zelezara Smederevo, adding that the company is gradually recovering under the new management, with the output doubling to around 90,000 tons a month.

The prime minister said that the other blast furnace in Zelezara should be put into operation by the end of the year, which will mean another 90,000 tons of steel per month and give a new momentum to Serbia's economic growth.

Dutch company HPK Engineering signed a contract with the Serbian government on March 21 this year, which stipulates the provision of management and consulting services.
