JIJEL-A contract for the construction of Bellara steel complex as part of an Algerian-Qatari partnership was signed Thursday in Jijel during a ceremony chaired by Minister of Industry and Mines Abdeslam Bouchouareb.

The documents were signed by Chairman of Algerian Qatar Board Solb (AQS) Hasnaoui Chiboub and president of the Italian industrial group Danieli Gian Pietro Benedetti, which is charge of building the complex.

The signing ceremony, which took place at the headquarters of the province, was attended by the governor of Jijel Bedrici Ali, CEO of AQS Abou-El Ainain, as well as many civilian and military officials and industry and mining executives.

"President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika fulfilled his commitments to carrying out this important project," stressed Bouchouareb who welcomed "the implementation of this project after forty years."

The Minister also evoked the "positive effects of the commissioning of this industrial complex to annually produce two (2) million tonnes of steel in the first phase and then double this production in the second phase by 2019."

Regarding the impact on the environment, Bouchouareb recalled that Algeria has opted for "modern technology that seriously takes into consideration all aspects of this component."

The minister said this complex, which is meant to "meet the needs of the country's needs in terms of steel," has ambitions to export the production surplus.

"Importing significantly impacts our resources and we are in a race against time," added Bouchouareb before announcing that the Bellara complex "will make Jijel a new industrial platform, after that of El Hadjar (Annaba)."
