Steel Asia Manufacturing Corp plans to set up a mill in Bulacan, Philippines

9 March 2015

STEEL ASIA Manufacturing Corp., the country’s leading steel manufacturer, said it is set to build a mill in Plaridel, Bulacan -- which it claims will be the biggest in the Philippines.

“The plant will be the country’s largest and will be among the most modern in the world since it will be using the latest available technology that allows production efficiency and environmental protection at the same time,” Steel Asia said in a statement on Sunday.

The mill will have a production capacity of 1.2 million metric tons, and will create nearly 3,000 direct and indirect jobs. Steel Asia added that since the plant will serve the Central Luzon plain, “deliveries will be quicker as trucks no longer need to enter EDSA” and add to congestion in Metro Manila, Steel Asia Vice-President Roberto Cola said in the statement.

In December, Steel Asia completed and started operating its P3-billion steel plant in Davao City, directly and indirectly generating about 2,000 jobs. It has a production capacity of 500,000 metric tons.

Both the Davao and Plaridel plants, according to Steel Asia, are designed with “the latest technology from Italy,” relying on rain water using huge reservoirs during the rainy season.

Both mills will also feature zero-wastewater systems that recycle all water back into the manufacturing line.

“These features are among an array of environmental measures Steel Asia will take to fully comply with existing laws,” Mr. Cola said.

Steel Asia has plants in Cagayan de Oro, Davao, Cebu, and Batangas, and two in Bulacan in addition to the proposed Plaridel plant.
