Sandvik Welcomes ISO 50001:2011 Certification for Energy Efficiency

5 January 2017

Sandvik, a world-leading developer and producer of advanced stainless steels, special alloys, titanium and other high-performance materials has achieved ISO 50001:2011 for its energy management system (EnMS) at Sandvik Chomutov Precision Tubes spol.s.r.o, a production facility based in Chomutov, Czech Republic.

During September and October, the Sandvik Chomutov Precision Tubes production site which manufactures umbilical tubes, heat exchangers as well as hydraulic and instrumentation systems, underwent a two-stage auditing process by global technical and business services firm, Lloyd’s Register. Based on the results of the audit, the facility was certified according to ISO 50001:2011.

The ISO 50001:2011 standard is an energy management standard that focuses on reducing energy intensity and a continual improvement of its energy efficiency. The process is based on a complete overview of the consumption of main and auxiliary equipment and improvements in monitoring the energy consumption during all operations amongst other requirements. With this systematic approach, organizations can benefit from a structured identification and application of new opportunities to save energy.

ISO 50001:2011 sets a comprehensive and clear approach towards smart manufacturing by enabling organisations to reduce their energy consumption through the introduction of alternative energy sources such as renewable energy.

Jiri Pohanka, Technical Manager, Sandvik Chomutov Precision Tubes spol.s.r.o. said: “The Sandvik management team played an active role during the planning process, which involved developing a strategy defining specific goals, for instance, lowering energy intensity and gas emissions, to improve the energy efficiency levels of our production facility. This ISO 50001:2011 certification underlines Sandvik’s unwavering commitment towards adhering to the international standards of energy efficiency and on a larger scale, reducing impact on the environment.”

As a world-leading developer and producer of advanced materials technology, Sandvik has quality management systems that are approved by internationally recognized organizations, for example, ASME Quality Systems Certificate as a materials organization, approval to ISO 9001, ISO/TS 16949, ISO 17025 and PED 97/23/EC, as well as product approvals from TÜV SÜD, JIS and Lloyd’s Register.

Separately, Sandvik Chomutov Precision Tubes s.r.o has been certified by Lloyd’s Register according to Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety Management Standards ISO 14001:2004 and OHSAS 18001:2007 on top of ISO 50001:2001.

Achieving ISO 50001:2011 reflects Sandvik’s continued focus on ensuring that environmental awareness, health and safety remain an integral part of operations and at the forefront of the business of being an advanced materials technology provider.

Developing an energy management system is in line with Sandvik Group’s long-term goal of reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions in its production sites in an effort to reduce climate impact. Sandvik Group has over 140 production, distribution and service sites around the world which are granted environmental permits where required depending on legislation.
