Strengthening Supply System for Ultra-high-tensile Steel Sheets New CGL to be installed at Kimitsu Works

Nippon Steel and Sumitomo Metal Corporation (NSSMC) will install a continuous hot-dip galvanizing line ("CGL") at Kimitsu Works (Kimitsu, Chiba Prefecture) to strengthen the supply system for ultra-high-tensile steel sheets*1. The new CGL is able to produce ultra-high-tensile steel sheets with strength in the 1.5GPa*2 class, has production capacity of 33,000 tons per month, and is scheduled to start production in the second quarter of fiscal year 2020.

In the automobile industry, environmental regulations are continuing to be strengthened and collision safety standards are made increasingly rigorous on a worldwide basis while needs for automobile bodies with lighter weight and higher strength are increasing. Consequently, the application of ultra-high-tensile steel at automakers is increasing and demand is projected to expand continuously. Furthermore, in the case of electric-powered vehicles such as electric cars, which are expected to increasingly penetrate the market, needs for the development of lighter bodies are likely to grow further going forward due to challenges involving driving distance and battery weight. Against this backdrop, NSSMC decided to strengthen its supply system for ultra-high-tensile steel sheets in order to respond to growing needs for ultra-high-tensile steel sheets that realize automobile bodies with lighter weight and enhanced high strength.

This policy is part of NSSMC's initiatives to "Creating the Value of Steel", and by providing high-performance materials such as ultra-high-tensile steel and solution technologies, NSSMC will contribute to customers' value creation.

It should be noted that the No. 4 CGL at Kimitsu Works will cease operation and be replaced by the new CGL

This means ultra-high-tensile steel sheets with a tensile strength of 1.0 GPa or more.
*2: GPa
Pascal is a unit for tensile strength and pressure. High-tensile steel with a tensile strength of 1.5 GPa will not fracture until a force of 150 kg per mm2 is applied.
