Esmark Steel Group Expands Mexico Presence to Meet Growing Flat-Rolled Steel Market Demand, Appoints Monclova-Based Executive

10 October 2023

Jim Bouchard, CEO of Esmark, Inc., has announced the formation of a new business entity within Esmark Steel Group called "Esmark Steel International." This new venture is dedicated to serving the Mexican industrial steel market and is situated in Monclova, Coahuila. Esmark Steel International's primary focus is to provide flat-rolled steel products to customers in sectors such as construction, metal products, rail cars, automobile machinery, iron plate, and electrical equipment. It operates as a wholly owned subsidiary of Esmark Steel Group.

Luis Landois has assumed the role of President at Esmark Steel International and will oversee its growing team and overall operations. He reports directly to Roberto Alvarez, CEO of Esmark Steel Group. Landois boasts more than 30 years of experience in the Mexican steel and industrial markets. He holds an MBA from ITESM in Monterrey, Mexico, and another MBA from National University. He has also served as a board member of AISI and CANACERO and resides in Monclova.

Esmark Steel International's product portfolio includes various flat steel products such as hot coil, cold coil, tinplate coil, metal coated coil, painted coil, and digitally printed coil. These products are readily available for purchase.

Jim Bouchard stated, "Over the past few years, we have seen the Mexican industrial steel market face significant challenges, particularly regarding the reliability of its flat-rolled suppliers. We know that customers are actively seeking alternative sources that can offer a reliable and continuous supply of products, as well as local service and North American provenance. We are focused on creating a consistent supply for our customers, leveraging service, processing, and logistics support at a local level."

Monclova has become a significant hub for wagon manufacturing in North America, attracting manufacturers and fabricators due to its abundant resources and skilled workforce. The city has also experienced growth in the energy sector, including the production of steel poles, wind turbine towers, pressure vessels, and pipes. Additionally, Monclova is home to the automotive sector, specializing in the manufacturing of truck chassis and trailers.

Mario Davila Delgado, Mayor of Monclova, expressed enthusiasm about the arrival of Esmark Steel International, saying, "We are excited to welcome Esmark Steel International to Monclova to not only meet the growing needs of our local industrial businesses but also to leverage our unmatched workforce. Esmark's reputation in North America is built on reliability, trust, and expertise. We look forward to establishing a long-term relationship with this new community partner."

Roberto Alvarez, CEO of Esmark Steel Group, added, "Esmark has been regularly purchasing steel products from Mexico for over a decade. We know the market and understand its current challenges. The local team, like Luis, is highly qualified in commercial, sales, marketing, and production, which matches Esmark's expertise."

In addition to this expansion into Mexico, Esmark Steel Group also announced several promotions within its global business activities:

  • Dominic Grossmann, the current Chief Operating Officer of Esmark Steel Group, has been appointed President of Esmark Steel Group.

  • John Dergentis, who serves as the vice president of operations, has been promoted to vice president and general manager of Esmark Steel Group, overseeing the operations of the Chicago Heights and University Park, Illinois divisions.
