Hyperion Materials & Technologies expands operations in Spain

20 September 2023

Hyperion Materials & Technologies, a leading global materials science company specializing in advanced hard and super-hard materials for various industries and applications, proudly announced the inauguration of its latest production facility near Barcelona, Spain. This expansion project at the existing carbide sintering plant and research and development center in Martorelles will significantly enhance the site's production capacity for cemented carbide base materials and components. Specifically, it will boost production by 60 percent, enabling the production of over 500 tons annually.

The construction of this project commenced in July 2022 and led to the expansion of the site from 11,650 square meters to 16,900 square meters. This expansion includes additional production space dedicated to manufacturing can tooling systems, wire drawing dies, and wear components. Moreover, the project equips the facility to manufacture all of Hyperion's tungsten carbide rolls used in the steel industry for producing long steel products via the hot rolling process. This expansion effort will also generate approximately 20 skilled manufacturing jobs in Spain, where Hyperion, headquartered in the United States, currently employs about 400 of its 2,100 global associates.

In addition to manufacturing, the Martorelles site serves as a hub for Hyperion's world-class carbide research and development team, which focuses on materials science and continuous innovation.

Ron Voigt, Chief Executive Officer of Hyperion, expressed the significance of this expansion, emphasizing the company's dedication to safeguarding its customers' supply chains and enhancing its capacity to meet global demand, especially in Europe. He stated, "This expansion represents a critical point in Hyperion's commitment to protecting our customers' supply chains and optimizing our ability to meet our customers' needs throughout Europe and the world. We are thrilled to continue our decades-long investment in Spain and look forward to even more success for our dedicated team members and the Barcelona region.
