Mechanical & Hydraulic Presses

Three European companies investing in South Africa for the first time, originally intended importing all of their capital equipment. When it was found that REEF could supply presses, made in house, with all of the latest features, including CNC controls, the decision was made to purchase locally."On a recent visit to one of the parent companies in the UK, we found our equipment to be far superior to that in use there: said Graham Ellett (General manager of REEF)

During the past decade, REEF has undertaken a number of interesting projects, such as the manufacture of a 15 000kN Compacting Press for low level radio active waste, Fully automated Multi Daylight Heated Platen Composite Panel Press for the production of large aluminium panels, a complete line for the Semi automated manufacture of fabricated pipe couplings, and recently, two fully automated Circle Blanking Lines for Hulett Aluminium Limited - Pietermaritzburg. Recently REEF has undertaken the interesting conversion of two large "H" Frame Presses to meet customers specific requirements. In both cases, the existing presses did not meet modern production needs because of their stroke and speed and had virtually become redundant. Although the basic frame, ram etc. were still in good condition. The machines were completely dismantled, new crankshafts with required stroke manufactured. The drive, flywheel, clutch and layshaft were re-designed and manufactured. New PLC controls and lubrication system fitted. Ram, gibs and frame re-machined. After re-assembly, the machines were test run and supplied back to the customer with Test Certificates and New Machine Guarantee. Total cost, less than half the price of a new machine. Recently REEF was approached by an Isando based company to help solve a problem. They had a 200 ton high speed directly driven laminating press no longer being used & required a press to accept progression tooling to press components for windscreen wiper blades. REEF overhauled the existing Schuler press, fitting a new crankshaft with a longer stroke, gear drive, REEF CB100 pneumatic clutch brake unit & PLC control. Fitted with a REEF servo roll feeder, the machine is now producing 100 parts per minute with NO supervision.

As a part of an ongoing modernization program, an Alrode based company (the largest manufacturer of cooker hoods), have installed a REEF H1/1600 press, decoiler, straightener, servo roll feeder to accept coiled material 900mm wide.
