Introduction:
Alcoa Corporation has announced a $65 million investment to expand foundry production capabilities at its Mosjøen smelter in Norway, enabling the inclusion of recycled content in the casting process.
Features:
The investment supports Alcoa’s strategy to meet growing demand for low-carbon aluminium products while incorporating post-consumer recycled aluminium into its production for the first time.
The project includes the expansion and upgrade of the Mosjøen casthouse, which is expected to increase production capacity by up to 75,000 metric tons annually.
The investment aligns with evolving customer requirements, particularly in the automotive and packaging industries, where demand for recycled-content materials continues to grow. It will also strengthen Alcoa’s competitive position in the European market.
Key elements of the upgrade include the installation of a new open-mold foundry casting line, additional melting furnaces, and other casthouse enhancements. These improvements will expand production capabilities, support a wider range of foundry alloys, provide greater flexibility in ingot sizes and formats, and increase recycled-content capacity.
As one of the largest industrial employers in Northern Norway, Mosjøen employs more than 700 people and plays a significant role in the regional economy.
The project will be implemented in phases, with commissioning and production ramp-up expected to continue throughout 2028.
