Introduction

Essar-backed Mesabi Metallics plans to invest $18 billion to develop a fully integrated American steel business, connecting its iron ore mine and pelletising facility on Minnesota’s Mesabi Iron Range with a new steel complex in Iowa.

Features

The investment includes a proposed $15 billion integrated steel complex in Iowa, alongside the existing $3 billion investment in the Minnesota iron ore mine and pelletising facility. The Minnesota project is the first new iron ore mine built in the United States in 50 years.

The Iowa steel complex will complete an integrated supply chain from iron ore mining to steel production. The project will use American-mined iron ore, transport it by rail to the Iowa facility and produce steel using American energy and workforce.

The development is expected to create jobs in Minnesota and Iowa and support economic growth across the Midwest. It will also establish an integrated U.S. steel supply chain, with iron ore mined, steel produced and finished products manufactured in the United States.
