Introduction
Outokumpu is moving ahead with its EVOLVE strategy to strengthen the production of key carbon-free materials, including chromium metal and enriched ferrochrome. The company is investing around USD 45 million in a new pilot plant in New Hampshire, U.S.
Features:
Outokumpu has invested in a state-of-the-art laboratory near Boston, U.S. Over the past four years, the technology has been developed and tested, with successful scale-up of key materials such as enriched ferrochrome and chromium metal from laboratory scale (1 g) to pre-pilot scale (1 kg).
The pilot phase aims to prove the scalability and industrial viability of the process by increasing production from 1 kg to 1 tonne per day. The pilot plant will produce enriched ferrochrome with 65% chrome content and chromium metal with more than 90% chrome content. This development will support the company’s move from traditional ferrochrome towards specialty metals.
The process also opens new production routes for high-purity metals like chromium metal, which are used in high-value sectors such as aerospace, defence, and energy.
Outokumpu plans to invest in its first industrial-scale plant with an expected annual capacity of about 10,000 tonnes. The industrial plant is targeted to be operational between 2029 and 2030, with full commercial potential expected from 2030 onwards.
