Esmark, Inc. announced today with sadness the death of Hans Joachim Schmidt, father of Esmark founding investor and longtime Esmark board member Uwe T. Schmidt. The Schmidt family played an important role in Esmark's attainment of leadership in the steel and tin business.

Hans Joachim Schmidt, who died on February 19, 2023 at the age of 90, was a widely admired and internationally recognized leader who worked in the iron and steel industry for more than 45 years.

Hans Joachim Schmidt worked for the Thyssen Group (now Thyssenkrupp) for 37 years. He has held the roles of President and Chief Executive Officer of Thyssen Canada Ltd and a member of the Board of Directors of Thyssen Inc., NA. Previously, he was Director of the Canadian-German Chamber of Industry and Commerce (AHK Canada), Managing Director of European Industrial Products, Ltd. (Toronto), Thyssen Steel & Pipe Ltd. (London) and GW Anderson & Co. (London/Dortmund).
