Esmark, Inc. recognizes legacy of Hans Joachim Schmidt, veteran in international iron and steel business

Esmark, Inc. announced today with sadness the death of Hans Joachim Schmidt, father of Esmark founding investor and longtime Esmark board member Uwe T. Schmidt. The Schmidt family played an important role in Esmark's attainment of leadership in the steel and tin business.

Hans Joachim Schmidt, who died on February 19, 2023 at the age of 90, was a widely admired and internationally recognized leader who worked in the iron and steel industry for more than 45 years.

Bouchard, Chairman and CEO of Esmark, Inc. “Hans Joachim was a role model and inspiration to his sons, and they in turn were instrumental in the success of Esmark and the establishment of the Crucial to companies in multiple industries. He was also an admirable person, father, friend and entrepreneur.”

"His never-ending optimism, zest for life and drive to succeed, coupled with a deep knowledge of the industry, shaped his sons, the Esmark family and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him," Bouchard continued. "Despite all the odds in his early life, Hans Joachim's perspective on the world and his response was an inspiration to many."

Hans Joachim Schmidt worked for the Thyssen Group (now Thyssenkrupp) for 37 years. He has held the roles of President and Chief Executive Officer of Thyssen Canada Ltd and a member of the Board of Directors of Thyssen Inc., NA. Previously, he was Director of the Canadian-German Chamber of Industry and Commerce (AHK Canada), Managing Director of European Industrial Products, Ltd. (Toronto), Thyssen Steel & Pipe Ltd. (London) and GW Anderson & Co. (London/Dortmund).

He leaves behind his wife, Sigrid "Sigi", and his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The full obituary can be found at .
