Project Overview Dangote Group based in Nigeria, in cooperation with Meacon, an India based consultancy firm, initiated construction of a steel mill in Lagos in February 2005. The first phase of the project was planned to be accomplished in 15 months from the date of inception, and would have an annual capacity to produce 500,000 metric tons per year of reinforcement steel bars, wire rods and billets. The plant shall use imported iron ore for producing sponge iron. In addition, a ship breaking plant was also being constructed simultaneously to supply raw material to the plant.
